Nest & Seed started with a simple frustration: how many feeders are sold as “squirrel-proof” when they aren’t? We got tired of watching people spend good money on a promise printed on a box. So we built a store around the opposite idea — explain why something works before we ask you to buy it. Every feeder here earns its spot by holding up, not by having the loudest label.
The Problem We Kept Seeing
Read enough one-star reviews and the same failures show up again and again. Plastic port rings that squirrels chew or pry off in an afternoon. Feeders that are almost impossible to clean, so mold sets in. Roofs that leak, so the seed clumps and spoils. Even feeding holes sized badly enough to trap small birds. None of that is bad luck — it’s bad design, repeated across dozens of cheap products. That pattern is exactly where our selection rules came from.
How We Choose What We Sell
Four tests decide whether a feeder makes it into the store:
- A mechanism we can explain. If we can’t tell you how it stops a squirrel, we don’t stock it. A weight-activated shroud or a spinning core is a design; “squirrel proof” on the box is a wish.
- No chewable plastic at the critical points. The places a squirrel actually attacks need to be metal, not soft plastic that gets defeated in days.
- The one-star review test. Before anything gets considered, we read the worst reviews first — that’s where a product’s real weaknesses live.
- The backyard test. Every feeder we sell hangs in a real backyard before it earns a spot in our store.

I’m Daniel, founder of Nest & Seed. I got into backyard birding gear the unglamorous way — analyzing thousands of bird feeder reviews and visiting the factories that make them. What We Won’t Do
We won’t tell you a feeder is 100% squirrel-proof, because no feeder is — the honest promise is a good mechanism plus smart placement. We won’t push backyard folklore either. Some popular “tricks,” like smearing petroleum jelly on a pole, can hurt birds by fouling their feathers, so we say so plainly. And when the question is about the birds themselves rather than the gear, we point you to the people who study them — Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Audubon Society — instead of guessing.
